Scotland, April 2005

Overview

Our travel started in Edinburgh in the late afternoon of Saturday, the 9th of April. Sunday was entirely devoted to the Old Town: the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyrood, Cornmarket... On Monday morning we collected the car from the rental agency at the airport and started our northbound journey. Our first stop was a visit to the Stirling Castle; we then headed for the Trossachs, where a scenic road eventually led us to Loch Lomond. We decided to spend the night at Inveraray, in a wonderful B&B room which faced Loch Fyne. The next day we drove along Loch Fyne until Lochgilphead and then along Loch Awe, where we visited the Kilchurn Castle. After a quick stop in Oban, we headed for Glencoe where we spent the night. Along the road we nearly missed the Stalker Castle! On the following morning we had a trek in the Glen Coe to get to the Lost Valley; back in the car, we reached Fort William for a quick rest and then moved on to Glenfinnan. From there, the Road to the Isles led us to Mallaig. The next morning we took the ferry to the Isle of Skye, whose visit occupied us for the whole day: we especially enjoyed the Trotternish peninsula, with the Quirang and the Duntulm Castle. On Friday we left Skye via the bridge and spent a couple of hours taking pictures of the Eilean Donan Castle; from there, we headed further north to the Glen Torridon, where the amazing sighting of a herd of deer made us realise that it was the right time to head home. The journey to Edinburgh was quite long, so we stopped at Perth for the night. On Saturday, having returned the car, we went shopping in the New Town; we departed from Edinburgh on Sunday at noon.
